Grande Ronde July 2007By Don JarrellThe flows we had for our trip ranged from a flow of about 2400 cfs at launch up to just over 3,000 cfs Wed. and Thurs. Our first nites camp was just past RM 77, on the left. It was small and poor. Our planned site at about RM 76.5 looked much better. The map shows a cluster of sites river right and left. My trip notes indicated a good site on RR. GPS: N45 46.876 W117 45.381 Camp 2 was very large and excellent, best on the river: River right, near RM 60. GPS N45 52.420 W117 35.620. Troy is at river mile 45.3. Karen and I took out here. So the rest of this is capture from my GPS. You will have to talk to others for any other details. Camp 3 was at RM 38.7, river right. GPS N45 59.864 W 117 22.904. Boggans @ RM 26.2. Below here the country is sparse and arid. Really no good camping sites. The ranger recommended something near RM 11, as being the last reasonable camping above the Narrows. Camp 4 on river left near RM 11. GPS N46 02.284 W117 04.459. The narrows we will likely have to portage. People should know there is a portage, for planning purposes. That is unless you can arrange to take out above the narrows. There is a dirt road on River right, but it is gated. Charlie B. mentioned that on a trip he did eons ago, they took out just above the Narrows. I wanted the last camp to be as close to the Narrows, as reasonable, because of the time it will take to scout, and portage. We only had the two solo canoes and the raft run it. Without a raft to carry group gear, and whatever, a portage will be much more difficult here. I do not recall water being available anywhere except Troy and Boggans. The access points on the maps show toilet facilities (vault), if they exist:
Chat with the ranger..... I think our two Kelty tarps can provide a kitchen shelter, and some additional. Donald R. Jarrell Training Supervisor |
