All paddlers must wear USCG approved life jackets (PFDs)
All paddlers must wear a protective helmet in rapids rated Class II or above
All paddlers must stay between the designated lead and sweep boats.
The lead boat will provide signals (AWA Safety Code) indicating a safe route in any congested area, or signal to take out and scout a drop.
The lead boat will stop and scout rapids as appropriate. Experienced paddlers may offer advice on routes, or recommend portage, as appropriate. The river leader may advise the group, or selected individuals to portage a rapid, as appropriate. See that they get assistance. Once a trip begins, if it becomes apparent that a person’s skill and experience are not adequate for the trip, use your best judgment on how to handle the situation. It is also possible that water/weather conditions may dictate that a trip be modified, or cancelled.
Individuals must weigh all factors and advice and make their own decisions to run a rapid or to portage, and inform the lead and sweep boats. Ask for assistance if portaging.
All boats must have at least one throw rope, and one spare paddle. Bailers are recommended for each boat.
Lead and sweep boats are to have a whistle. All paddlers are encouraged to have a whistle.
Any injuries or illnesses should be reported to the Trip Coordinator, as soon as possible.
POST Canoe Club utilizes the AWA Safety Code and encourages all of its members to be knowledgeable of its safety provisions.
